Back doors – Silver End information
Silver End is an exclusive village in Essex built upon a revolutionary idea. In 1926 Henry Crittall wanted to prove that he could improve productivity by looking after his workers at Crittal Windows.
He created a unique housing development based around a community and various amenities so the workers and their families could be self-contained with everything they needed to thrive. Facilities included a large department store, a cinema, a village hall, a library, a snooker room and a health clinic.
The white buildings with flat roofs were a homage to the art deco designs popular at that time. Although many buildings were demolished in 2008 after the factory was closed, it has now been declared a conservation area.
New development has reinvigorated the village, served now by three churches, a primary school, a local store, a library and a GP Surgery.
