Fully fitted Doors – Silver End information
Silver End is a unique Essex village based on a revolutionary idea. Henry Crittall of Crittall Windows decided to improve his workers’ lives by providing them with homes and a sense of community.
The resulting housing development featured plenty of amenities for workers and their families to thrive. Original facilities included a large department store, a cinema, a village hall, a library, a snooker room and a health clinic.
The village was built in 1926, and the striking art deco buildings were in traditional white with flat roofs. Sadly, in 2008, many of the originals were demolished when the Crittall factory closed down. Fortunately, the area has now been declared a conservation area, so the remaining buildings should survive.
Rather than become a ghost town, the village has been reinvigorated with new homes, three churches, a primary school, a local store, a library and a GP Surgery.
