Back doors – Silver End information
Silver End is an exclusive village in Essex that started from a revolutionary idea. Back in 1926, Henry Crittall wanted to prove that he could increase productivity at his window company by taking more care of his workers.
He created a unique village based around housing, community and vital amenities for his staff and their families. Facilities included a large department store, a cinema, a village hall, a library, a snooker room and a health clinic.
The iconic white buildings with flat roofs were a homage to the art deco designs popular in that period. Sadly, many of the original buildings were demolished in 2008 when the factory closed. Thankfully, the remaining ones have now been declared a conservation area.
New development has reinvigorated the village, now served by three churches, a primary school, a local store, a library and a GP Surgery.
